The Adoption Process

The adoption process involves the following steps:

Step 1: Submit an application
You can submit an application for a specific dog that you see listed on Petfinder and being fostered by this rescue. You will then be contacted by one of our Applications Coordinators, and your application forwarded to the relevant foster home.

Step 2: Contact from the foster home
You will be contacted by the foster home where the specific dog you identified in your application is being fostered. The foster home will conduct an interview over the phone to see if the dog is a good match for you.

Step 3: Reference check
If the foster home believes their foster dog may be a fit, you will be contacted by the foster home where the specific dog you identified in your application is being fostered. The foster home will conduct an interview over the phone to see if the dog is a good match for you. Then if you would like to proceed with your application, the references you provided on the application will be checked. The references you list on your application must not be family members. If you provide a vet reference, please make sure that you contact your vet and give your vet permission to release information about your current or previous pet(s). If the vet does not have your express permission, the vet clinic will not release any information to the reference checker.

Step 4: Home Visit
Someone will contact you to arrange an appointment for a home visit. The main purpose of the home visit is to ensure that the home is a safe and secure place for the dog involved. All members living in the home must be present for the home visit. Once the visit has concluded, the person conducting the visit will submit a completed home visit report to the rescue.

Step 5: Finalization of the application
The rescue will make a determination regarding the application to adopt and inform you of the outcome via email.

Step 6: Payment of the adoption fee
If the adoption is approved, this step involves the payment of the adoption fee. Payment can be done either by certified cheque or bank draft on adoption day or by via e-transfer prior to adoption day (instructions for this last option will be included in the congratulatory email from the rescue).

Step 7: Contract
Once the fee is paid via e-transfer or you have indicated that you will be paying by certified cheque or bank draft on adoption day, a contract must be drawn up and sent to the foster home via email. On adoption day, the foster home will ask you to sign two copies of the adoption contract and you will take one copy with you and the rescue will retain the other copy.

Step 8: Adoption Day
You make arrangements with the foster home and pick up your new family member.
